It’s never an auspicious beginning when a blog name needs explanation.

The phrase “Afflict the Pale” is a combination of two things. The Pale (as in “beyond the pale”) was a Norman/English settlement area in Ireland in the late Middle Ages. So, an early colonization effort by the English in Ireland.

While the phrase “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable” has been applied to journalism and the newspaper business, I prefer the voice of Mary Harris Jones (“Mother Jones”)¬†speaking it.

So, Afflict the Pale basically means the long-term resistance to colonization. You can take that however you wish.

Me? I am Haywood Debbs and I will be your host for these little excursions, these blog posts. No need to stand on ceremony in comments; I’m really quite friendly and like a lively debate.
